Services Controller & Decoder Upgrades

Modernize Without Full System Replacement

Controller & Decoder Upgrades

Many commercial properties have aging irrigation infrastructure that's still structurally sound but technologically obsolete. We specialize in upgrading controllers and decoder modules to modern 2-wire platforms — often without replacing underground wiring or valves — dramatically improving system capability at a fraction of full replacement cost.

Overview

A lot of commercial irrigation infrastructure installed in the 1990s and 2000s is mechanically sound but operating on platforms that are no longer supported, no longer have replacement parts available, or lack the smart scheduling and diagnostics that current systems provide. Full system replacement is expensive and disruptive — but it's often not necessary.

In many cases, existing underground wiring, valves, and heads can be retained. We replace the controller and decoder modules — the electronic components — while preserving the field infrastructure. The result is a fully modern 2-wire system with current platform support, smart ET scheduling, and fault diagnostics, at a fraction of full replacement cost.

We manage the entire migration: platform selection, compatibility assessment, controller replacement, decoder reprogramming, flow sensor integration, and staff training. We also handle the zone-by-zone verification after commissioning to confirm every decoder is communicating correctly before we leave.

What's Included

  • Platform migration planning and compatibility assessment
  • Controller replacement and commissioning
  • Decoder module replacement and zone reprogramming
  • Integration with flow sensors and weather-based controllers
  • Training for property staff on new system operation
  • Preserve existing underground wiring and valves where possible

Best for

Properties with Hunter ICC, Rain Bird ESP, or other older platform systems

How We Do It

A defined process that produces consistent, documented results on every project.

01

System Assessment

Complete audit of existing controller, decoder modules, wiring, and field infrastructure. We document what's compatible with current platforms and what will need replacement.

02

Platform Selection

Based on zone count, feature requirements, water district compatibility needs, and budget, we recommend the best target platform and provide a cost comparison for each option.

03

Migration Planning

Detailed migration plan including decoder addressing strategy, phasing (if the upgrade will happen in stages), programming data migration, and expected downtime per zone.

04

Controller Installation

New controller installation, wiring, and initial platform configuration. We import existing zone scheduling data where possible to minimize reprogramming time.

05

Decoder Replacement & Programming

Zone-by-zone decoder replacement, addressing, and communication verification. Each zone is tested individually before moving to the next.

06

Commissioning & Training

Full system commissioning run, flow sensor calibration, smart scheduling setup, and training session for property staff or facilities manager on new controller operation.

Who This Service Is For

  • Properties with end-of-life or unsupported controllers
  • Systems where replacement parts are no longer available
  • Properties upgrading to smart ET-based scheduling
  • HOAs looking to improve water district compliance
  • Golf courses migrating from legacy platforms
  • Properties adding flow sensing and leak detection

Common Questions

Can I keep my existing underground wiring and valves?

In most cases, yes. If the existing wire path is intact and passes continuity and insulation resistance tests, it can typically be retained. We assess wiring condition as part of the initial system evaluation.

How much does a controller upgrade cost compared to full replacement?

Controller and decoder upgrades typically cost 30–60% of full system replacement, depending on how much field infrastructure can be retained. We provide a detailed cost comparison as part of the assessment.

Will my scheduling and zone programming transfer to the new system?

We transfer zone programming data where the platforms support it. For platforms without direct migration paths, we document existing schedules and rebuild them on the new controller.

What platforms do you upgrade to?

We install and commission Hunter ACC2, Rain Bird ESP-LXIVM, Toro Sentinel, and Baseline BC3000. Platform selection depends on zone count, existing infrastructure compatibility, and your feature requirements.
